Richard Thérien
Canadian music critic Richard Thérien heard something distinctive in Bachot Muna’s playing.
On “Groovy Blues,” it was the “hypnotic bass line” that caught Thérien’s ear, reminding him of the pianist Mal Waldron.
On “I’m Gonna Rock Your Night,” Thérien heard another side of Bachot’s playing — stride, ragtime and boogie-woogie in the left hand, a blues-inflected right hand — and he heard “a voice of his own.”
Dionizy Piątkowski
He heard jazz feeling, expressive improvisation and the African character running through Bachot’s playing.
On “Globe Trotter Blues,” Piątkowski heard Bachot’s African roots meeting the language of jazz.
“I’m Gonna Rock Your Night” revealed another side of the music — energetic, blues-driven and deeply rooted in the piano tradition.
With “Groovy Blues” and, more broadly, the album Jazz & Dreams, Piątkowski heard the same combination of jazz expression, improvisation and African character that runs through Bachot’s musical identity.
Piątkowski concluded that Bachot Muna is “a very interesting artist who deserves attention.”
